Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki – Ngāti Apa

Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki – Ngāti Apa is the post settlement governance entity of Ngā Wairiki me Ngāti Apa.  This entity represents multiple hapū collectives who were traditionally autonomous and operated as small iwi, but came together as Ngā Wairiki or as Ngāti Apa in times of need.  Four of these autonomous hapū collectives still have Marae and have remained active to today;

Parewānui

The hapū collective of Ngāti Kauae me Ngāti Tauira currently retains the former Parewānui School as its Marae.  Hapū names include Ngāti Kauae, Ngāti Tauira, Ngāti Rangiwaho, Ngāti Kahuwairua, Ngā Tai and Ngā Potiki.  This group also has strong ties with Ngāti Tumokai, Rangitāne and Muaūpoko.

Tini Waitara Marae

The hapū collective of Tini Waitara collectivises under the name of Ngā Ariki and is made up of hapū including Ngāti Rangitumoana, Ngāti Hinewai, Ngāti Tamawaina, Ngāti Rangipuhi and Ngāti Kiriwheke.

Whangaehu Marae

The hapū collective of Ngāti Rangiwhakaturia me Ngā Uri o Taitapu (Ngāti Tumataikura) are based at the Whangaehu Marae.  Hapū names include Ngāti Rangiwhakaturia, Ngāti Tumataikura, Ngāti Ratua, Ngāti Hika Pirau, Ngāti Rangiwaho, Ngāti Kiriwheke, Ngāti Rangiwhaiao and Ngāti Tamaea.

Kauangaroa Marae

The hapū collective of Kauangaroa have collectivised under the name Ngā Wairiki ki Uta.  Hapū within this collective include Ngāti Huru Te Ra, Ngāti Houmahanga, Ngāti Tukorero, Ngāti Paenga, Ngāti Tuhekerangi and others.

There is a fifth recognised hapū/iwi that has been somewhat inactive since the 1800s.  These are the hapū that descend from Tuariki, the master of Tutaeporoporo.  The story of Tuariki and Tutaeporoporo is well recorded in the southern Rangitīkei and Whanganui districts.  The hapū that collectivise under Tuariki include Ngāti Ika, Ngāti Pikinau, Ngāti Tupua, Ngāti Tupataua and others.
