Rangitīkei 253

The Rangitīkei 253 project vividly showcases the rich narratives of the Rangitīkei Awa, highlighting the deep, enduring bond we share with the river and its heritage. Through these stories, we reflect on our collective memories and aspirations, while also advocating for the river’s protection and preservation. The project fosters community dialogue, encouraging active stewardship of both the land and water. By honoring our past, we aim to inspire a shared commitment to sustainability and ensure that the river continues to thrive for generations to come.

Lakes Project

Lakes380 is the biggest scientific study of New Zealand’s lakes in our history. The Lakes380 team is traveling across New Zealand collecting and analysing water samples, lake bottom sediment samples and lake sediment cores from about 10% of our 3,800 lakes (>1 ha). A suite of scientific tools are being used to determine the current and historic health of each lake.  Lakes380 datasets will be a public resource for New Zealand and global scientific advancement.

Through Nga Puna Rau’s partnership with the Lakes380 team, scientific data has been interwoven with mātauranga Māori to provide a richer understanding of the value and health of our lakes..

Whenua Māori

Our project primarily focuses on supporting Māori landowners and managers within the Rangitīkei catchment. This initiative is designed to empower these landowners with the knowledge and resources needed for sustainable farm management. By aligning with current freshwater and environmental reforms, we aim to enhance their ability to effectively manage their land while promoting ecological stewardship and sustainability.

Cultural Assessments

We place great importance on thoroughly assessing the impact of our projects on the well-being of the community as we work diligently to safeguard our vital connection to the land and water that sustains us. Central to our approach is the active engagement with our Stakeholders and whanau, as their insights and perspectives are crucial in shaping our strategies and decisions. By ensuring that their voices are incorporated into our planning, we are committed to fostering a sustainable future that honors both people and the environment.

Mātauranga Māori

We strive to gather and safeguard Mātauranga Māori through impactful and meaningful collaborative projects that actively engage local communities. By doing so, we aim to foster a deeper sense of connection and shared responsibility. Our efforts focus on meticulously documenting and sharing the invaluable knowledge associated with the Rangitīkei Awa, highlighting its rich cultural significance. This commitment ensures that both current and future generations can appreciate and preserve the river’s heritage and the wisdom it embodies.
